5. Pandas, Tigers, and Manatees, Oh My!

As this article in Scientific American says, the numbers don’t tell the whole story, but tigers have started to “claw their way back” (har har) into some countries, including India and Russia. The number of wild tigers has increased to 3,900. Also, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species moved Giant Pandas from endangered to vulnerable, and West Indian Manatees from endangered to threatened. This is largely due to conservation efforts.

According to National Geographic, there is also evidence that the ozone hole is growing smaller. The 1987 Montreal Protocol represents a united international effort to take CFCs out of use in spray bottles and coolants, and no chlorine = smaller hole.
