6. Medical Advances

2016 has been filled with medical breakthroughs and advancements.

Due to the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge,” more than $155 million was raised to find new treatments for the disease. A global collaboration of researchers (Project MinE) was able to make a breakthrough in identifying gene NEK1, one of the most common genes to contribute to ALS, and the scientists now have a target for gene therapy development.

News Medical reported that a new immunotherapy treatment study led by Professor Angus Dalgleish of St. George’s University of London has shown results in treating patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is known for being the most lethal form of cancer, and little advancement has been made in its treatment in the past 20 years.
