8. Legalized Marijuana

In what the Washington Post has called possibly the “beginning of the end for marijuana prohibition” and the “biggest electoral victory for marijuana reform since 2012”, California, Massachusetts, and Nevada voted for the legalization of marijuana. Several other states, including Montana, Florida, North Dakota, and Arkansas voted for provisions in medical marijuana use.

Californians who are 21 years of age and older will be able to possess, transport and buy up to 28.5 grams of marijuana for recreational use. California has long been seen as a “bellwether” by lawmakers and reformers, and these advancements could be indicative of larger federal change.
